Al-Qaida bombing in Yemen kills 6 soldiers

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A Yemeni military official says a suspected al-Qaida suicide car bombing has killed six soldiers at an army headquarters in the country's south.

The official says the attack took place on Friday in Abyan province. He says the attacker detonated his explosives-laden car outside the military headquarters in the town of Lawder as troops were gathering for the morning assembly.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. He says the explosion also wounded at least 10 soldiers, including the brigade's commander who was flown to hospital by a military helicopter.

Meanwhile, the official SABA news agency says al-Qaida militants attacked several military checkpoints in the central province of Bayda on Thursday night, killing one soldier and wounding two in those attacks.
