South struggles out of deep freeze

The Deep South is still digging out of the not-so-deep snow that nonetheless paralyzed the region, forcing schoolchildren to spend the night at schools, stranding motorists, and extending commutes normally counted in minutes to hours.

Some resolutely made the best of it, taking the opportunity provided by closed offices and schools to slide down snowy hills and binge-watch movies while indoors. Volunteers and National Guard teams worked to get gas, food and blankets to those stuck in their cars. Here's a gallery of images that show the span of the storm.
