Chiefs player's neighborhood stunned by violence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — People are coming and going from the house where a day before Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend before committing suicide in front of his coach.

Police did not release any additional information about Saturday's murder-suicide. Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had a 3-month-old daughter. A man who answered the door at the couple's house Sunday asked reporters, "Can you all respect grieving?"

A short time later, two men loaded bags in a car, and two women drove away in it. Neighbors in the Kansas City subdivision are stunned. Thirty-one-year-old Kristen VanMeter said she had taken community-college courses with Perkins.

She called the murder-suicide a "surprise" and questioned what triggered it. Police reiterated Sunday that the couple had argued recently.
