Rookie Guthrie takes early lead

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Rory McIlroy left early. Tiger Woods was on the ropes. And with all that drama Friday, hardly anyone noticed PGA Tour rookie Luke Guthrie showing off some of his potential with a 7-under 63 to take the early lead in the Honda Classic.

McIlroy walked off the course after playing eight holes in 7-over par. He told reporters he wasn't in a good place mentally, and then later issued a statement that he couldn't concentrate because of a sore wisdom tooth. Woods was struggling to make the cut late in his round.

Guthrie played bogey-free on PGA National and was at 9-under 131 among early starters. He was one shot ahead of Michael Thompson (65). Lee Westwood (68) and Geoff Ogilvy (66) were among those three shots behind.
