AP PHOTOS: Wild hats & fast horses at Ky. Derby

Bold hats, big bets and thundering hooves were the order of the day at the Kentucky Derby, where the 140th run for the roses took place Saturday evening at Churchill Downs.

California Chrome made it look easy on Saturday, pulling away down the stretch to win the Derby by 1 3/4 lengths. People-watching remained a popular activity when the horses weren't running on a mild, breezy Derby Day. Colorful plumed hats — a Derby fashion staple — were plentiful as tens of thousands of fans filed into the famed racetrack.
