Suspect in New Year's Eve stabbings in Manchester charged

LONDON (AP) — A Manchester man has been charged with attempted murder and a terrorism offense stemming from a stabbing attack at a Manchester train station on New Year's Eve. Greater Manchester Police said Friday that 25-year-old Mahdi Mohamud was charged in the multiple stabbing attack that injured a couple in their 50s and a police sergeant. He faces three counts of attempted murder.

He had earlier been detained under the mental health act. Mohamud is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on June 12. Transport police used stun guns and pepper spray to subdue Mohamud after the attack began. He was shouting extremist Islamic slogans during the attack.
