French Rugby Federation considering hiring foreign coach

PARIS (AP) — The French Rugby Federation is asking its clubs whether it should hire a foreigner to coach the national team to the 2023 Rugby World Cup it is staging. France has never had a foreign coach.

The federation said in a statement on Friday that amateur clubs have been sent a letter letting them know they will be asked the question in a referendum in April. Every club will get a vote. France is coached by Jacques Brunel, who has only five wins in 16 tests since he replaced the sacked Guy Noves in December 2017. Brunel's tenure is likely to end after the Rugby World Cup in Japan this year.
