Schalke dominated possession from the start but lacked the cutting edge to really trouble Robin Zentner in the Mainz goal until Harit set up Serdar, who refrained from celebrating against his former club.
A fan needed medical attention in the stands, but there was little happening on the pitch until Mainz striker Onisiwo came on in the 71st. The Austrian forward equalized four minutes later, even with four Schalke defenders around him. Jean-Paul Boetius played the ball in and Onisiwo simply turned around and unleashed a perfectly placed curling shot inside the far corner.
Harit saved the best for last, however, when he took a pass from Jonjoe Kenny, went past a defender and then curled the ball with the outside of his boot inside the far past from about 15 meters (yards) despite a host of defenders in his way.
Schalke moved level with Leipzig at the top of the Bundesliga ahead of the rest of the weekend's games. Leipzig visits Werder Bremen on Saturday.
