Important rules for a strong password

How do you create a secure password?

Secure passwords are called strong. That means they are hard to guess, and not known to anyone except you. The first time you think of a password is when you create an e-mail account. Then you definitely think about how to create a secure password, but do you follow the most important rules for a strong password? At mail.com, we care about the security of your e-mail account, which is why we require the following when you create a password:

  • That it is at least 8 characters long
  • That it contains both uppercase and lowercase letters
  • That it contains numbers
  • That it contains special characters, e.g. "!", "&", "-".

REMEMBER: Do not choose a password that is easy to guess, e.g. personal data such as your initials, your date of birth, or the name of a family member or pet. Nothing that would make it easy for someone to get into your private correspondence without your permission.

How do you change a password at mail.com?

In order to change your password, you need to log in to your mail.com e-mail account. Are you there? Good. Select the “Home” tab at the top of the e-mail client, then click “My Account” under “Personalization” on the left side. After that, click “Security Options”. Under “Password,” click “Change password”. Enter your current password and then enter your new, strong password twice. By clicking “Save changes,” you confirm the change of your password, and from now on, you have to use this one to log in to your mail.com e-mail account. Why are secure passwords so important and how often should you change them?

It is important to have a secure password not only at mail.com, but also on any other sites you need to log in to, e.g. banks, forums or online shops. With a strong password, you can better protect yourself from any fraud or unpleasant situations.
If you are wondering how often you should change your password, ask yourself the two most important questions:

  • When was the last time you changed the password for your e-mail account?
  • How often do you change your password?

If you have never changed your password, now is the time. It’s good to change it from time to time. Some even recommend changing it every 3 months. Of course, the more often the better.
